Medical school teacher honoured with teaching excellence award

Physiology Lead at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS), Dr Harry Witchel, has been awarded an Advance HE National Teaching Fellowship.

The fellowship scheme celebrates and recognises individuals who have made an outstanding impact on student outcomes and the teaching profession in higher education.

Director of Undergraduate Teaching and Learning at BSMS, Professor Juliet Wright, said: “Huge congratulations to Harry. His innovative teaching of core scientific principles, physiology and function of the heart, lungs and blood to year 1 students, ensures they are inspired and best prepared for their onward training in clinical medicine and patient care.”

Dean of BSMS, Professor Malcolm Reed, added: “‘I also congratulate Harry on this achievement which is richly deserved and recognises his commitment and  quality of  teaching at BSMS.”

On receiving the award, Dr Witchel said: "Really this was a team effort and this award would not have been possible without the exceptional contributions of other lead instructors on the module including Tim Chevassut (haematology), Catherine Hennessy (anatomy), the respiratory team including Harpreet Ranu, Karen Patterson and Katie Hurt, the cardiologists including Steve Coombs and Nalyaka Sambu, Malcolm Johnston (imaging) and health psychology (Richard deVisser).

“The support of the curriculum office including Lisa Kearley, Jenny Downing, Denise Nicholson and Amy Gore was key to the module’s success, along with the people who kept the module on track, which are the phase lead team (Andrew Dilley and Lisa Mullen), and the module's direct school management (Juliet Wright, Clare Castledine and Liz Kaye).  Finally, none of this would have been possible or worth doing without our spectacular students at BSMS.”
