Dr Duncan Shrewsbury, Senior Lecturer in General Practice at BSMS, has been awarded the highest level of professional recognition from the Higher Education Academy – the Principal Fellow (PFHEA) status.
The award is in recognition of a sustained and substantial impact from effective strategic leadership in higher education, resulting in changes of practice and improvements in quality.
Duncan is the first person from BSMS to attain PFHEA status, and the only person employed by the University of Sussex to currently hold this. He is also one of only three people at the University of Brighton who hold it.
Duncan said: “A core component to my award has been the work that I have done around inclusion in medical education and practice, especially some of the work I did when re-developing the clinical and community practice modules in Years 1 and 2 here at BSMS.

“One of my firm commitments is to supporting development of faculty, as well as learners, and I am very keen to help people work towards professional recognition through the HEA themselves.”
Professor Juliet Wright, Director of Undergraduate Teaching and Learning at BSMS, added: "This is a remarkable achievement and unique Duncan in the medical school. The award is thoroughly deserved and recognises Duncan’s sustained and high-quality work."
The PFHEA status is awarded to individuals who are able to provide evidence of a sustained and effective record of impact at a strategic level in relation to teaching and learning, as part of a wider commitment to academic practice. Duncan’s award follows the success of his application to Advance HE for Principal Fellowship.
