New 'Handy' animation launched to promote greener hand hygiene in healthcare

The Green Healthcare Hub, spearheaded by Professor Mood Bhutta, Chair in ENT Surgery and Professor of Sustainable Healthcare at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS), has launched a powerful new animated video at promoting environmentally conscious clinical practice.

Titled ‘Handy’, this engaging animated video advocates for proper hand hygiene while actively discouraging the unnecessary use of gloves in healthcare settings.

The animation delivers a clear message: effective hand hygiene can reduce infection risk without relying on single-use gloves—cutting down on clinical waste and the associated carbon footprint.

The initiative is part of a broader effort led by the Green Healthcare Hub to reimagine how healthcare is delivered. By tackling avoidable waste, excess tests, and unnecessary appointments, the Hub seeks to empower clinicians to make simple yet impactful changes that contribute to a more sustainable NHS.

“Our goal is to support the NHS in becoming a global leader in low-carbon, sustainable healthcare,” said Professor Bhutta. “Through accessible resources like ‘Handy’, we want to show how evidence-based decisions at the front line of care can improve patient outcomes and environmental impact.”

The animation forms part of the Hub’s expanding library of tools designed to drive cultural and practical shifts in healthcare. Drawing on research, professional networks, and insights from past quality and safety campaigns, the Hub’s work underscores that sustainable healthcare is not only possible—but urgently necessary.
