Professor Gail Davey announced as NIHR Senior Investigator

Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is delighted to announce that Gail Davey OBE, Professor of Global Health Epidemiology, has been appointed as a Senior Investigator by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). Senior Investigators represent NIHR’s most outstanding and influential researchers, recognised for the excellence, global reach and impact of their work.

Professor Davey, whose primary research field is Epidemiology, joins a prestigious cohort of national research leaders who help shape the future of health and care research. Senior Investigators also play a key role in mentoring the next generation of researchers, strengthening research culture and embedding inclusion across the sector.

This year’s cohort includes 43 new Senior Investigators, drawn from a wide range of disciplines including paediatrics, dentistry, nursing, midwifery, podiatry, health services research, statistics and discovery science. Appointments reflect NIHR’s commitment to recognising leadership across diverse settings, including research excellence within post 1992 universities and, for the first time, senior research leaders from Northern Ireland.

Reflecting on the announcement, Professor Davey said: “I’m excited to receive this recognition from NIHR. It will facilitate the establishment of the WHO Resilient and Sustainable Health Systems Approach for Podoconiosis Elimination (RESHAPE) Platform, an important translational step that builds on two decades of research into this highly neglected condition.”

Professor Richard McManus, Dean of BSMS, added: “We are immensely proud of Gail’s appointment as an NIHR Senior Investigator. It recognises her exceptional contributions to epidemiology and global health, as well as her leadership, mentorship and commitment to research that makes a real difference to people’s lives. Well done, Gail!”

Professor Davey now joins a College of approximately 200 NIHR Senior Investigators across the UK. BSMS now has three of these with Gail joining Professors Mel Newport and Richard McManus who were appointed in previous years.
