Student inclusivity

BSMS is committed to the Inclusive Practice Partners (IPP) scheme, a programme designed to empower students and staff to work together to decolonise the curriculum. Dr Muna Al-Jawad (Undergraduate Curriculum Lead) works with undergraduate medical students and faculty to develop our curriculum to be inclusive to and of marginalised groups and their intersections. This has resulted many changes related to diversifying case studies and images; becoming more open about the history and politics of medicine; and tackling teaching practices that might exclude some students. The anatomy curriculum has been extended to include trans anatomy, gender affirmation surgery, Intersex anatomy, diversity of pelvic shape and Sickle cell anatomy/pathology. The team recognise there is much more work to do and welcome feedback from students and faculty.

BSMS Equality, Diversity and Inclusion impact awards

The annual EDI Impact Awards were implemented in 2023 as a way to recognise and celebrate the passion, dedication and time devoted by students in their promotion of, and commitment to, equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility across all BSMS activities. All BSMS staff and students can nominate undergraduate and postgraduate students and students can be nominated for a broad range of EDI activities including leading on EDI projects, speaking at events, supporting staff to reach EDI objectives, developing student led research or supporting the development of community engagement across BSMS. Previous winners include students who had continued to contribute towards decolonising the curriculum, established a student disability network and been instrumental in the BSMS Time for Dementia research Project.
