About the project

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition associated with sensory sensitivity, preferences for routines and familiarity, and differences in interpersonal interactions. Given these differences in sensory sensitivity and social interaction, the physical changes of menstruation and menopause and their psychosocial impacts may be more challenging for autistic women than their neurotypical peers.

There is a need for better understanding of autistic women's experiences of menstruation and menopause, and sexual wellbeing more broadly. There is also a need to understand autistic women's relevant health care needs and experiences. To begin to address this need, we are conducting a survey of autistic women. The findings from this study will inform studies that will use in-depth interviews to explore autistic women’s experiences, and health care professionals’ knowledge and beliefs. These activities will be directed toward provide an educational toolkit for health care professionals to help them to better address autistic women's healthcare needs
