It only takes 30 minutes a day for adults and 60 minutes a day for children to get fitter, healthier and happier. You can even break it down into 10-minute slots!

We have activities for all ages and abilities from walks in the park to acrobatics and netball to tai chi. So, whether you're a fitness freak or a couch potato, from 2 to 102, we've got something for you.

Sussex Community Development Association

Sussex Community Development Association (SCDA) is an umbrella organisation managing community projects across East Sussex. Making it Happen is one such project. It is an Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) initiative led by SCDA, delivered in partnership with four other organisations.

The project is about discovering, celebrating and building on the positive things in local neighbourhoods. Community Development Workers support communities to come together to make the most of the opportunities that exist to create positive change. They do this by making connections, building relationships, facilitating networking and collaboration, and by supporting communities to develop the confidence and skills to initiate positive action.

SCDA is keen to support the SPICES project within the Newhaven area. The current COVID 19 crisis has highlighted the vulnerability of people with underlying health conditions but has also demonstrated a fantastic community response to that crisis. Participation in the SPICES project could be a wonderful opportunity to build on that community response to foster ongoing commitment to looking after the health and wellbeing of ourselves and others.

The Hangleton and Knoll Project

The Hangleton and Knoll Project (HKP) is a Community Development and Youthwork charity, operating in the West of the City of Brighton and Hove, working in an area of social housing and high levels of poverty and deprivation.

Working with residents, for residents and governed entirely by the local community, HKP is an award-winning example of asset-based development and empowerment. HKP works in partnership with local primary care via the facilitation of the West Area Health Forum which brings together six local surgeries with other health stakeholders and residents and patients to develop joint solutions to local health priorities.

Joanna Martindale, HKP CEO, said: "We are delighted to be a community partner in the Spices project which will provide much needed research evidence for a community and peer approach to health messaging, an approach which we know works on the ground. This is an opportunity for us to have a chance to reflect and develop our practice alongside learning from others."

FSN

FSN is a charity based in Hastings and St Leonards which has been in existence for more than 80 years with its aim to provide support for children, young people and families. FSN offers a range of services for people across East Sussex including bereavement and mental health support for children and young people and a variety of courses and qualifications for adults. FSN leads on two Health and Wellbeing Hubs in St Leonards, delivering wellbeing activity aimed at supporting confidence and self-esteem of adults in the area.

Volunteers play a vital role in the work of FSN, supporting projects but also offering peer led activity building on the health and wellbeing of our communities.

As an organisation who values volunteers and the power of peer support, FSN sees the SPICES project as a way to embed the health messages to our communities in a much more sustainable way. We are looking forward to working in partnership with the SPICES team to engage and improve the health of the community we work in.

Wellsbourne Healthcare CIC

Wellsbourne Healthcare CIC is a GP surgery and Community Interest Company that set up in East Brighton in April 2018. The Community Interest Company is providing a new and, so far, highly successful approach to primary care and general practice. Alongside our regular clinical and admin staff, we employ a social prescriber, health engagement worker, mental health worker, community pharmacist, community projects manager and a volunteer coordinator, supplementing our NHS contract income with our own fund raising. All GP surgeries, us included, find themselves under increasing pressure to meet targets that are decided by others. These targets do not always reflect the things that are most important to the people who go to that surgery. Most of what affects our health happens outside the NHS. It’s about our family, our work, our income, our schooling, our home and our neighbours. We believe the SPICES project will help us to support local people in the right way, at the right time. That is why we are delighted to be involved.

The National Centre for Behaviour Change (NCBC)

The National Centre for Behaviour Change started in 2003 it had become clear there was a lack of evidence-based, central support and guidance for developing and maintaining best practice in supporting behaviour change. We have recruited some of the world’s leading experts who are passionate about creating effective long-term change and ensuring this is deep-rooted and sustainable. From this, we have developed our services to meet our fundamental aim: creating positive, person-centred sustainable change.
