Inclusive practice
BSMS is committed to ensuring that our curriculum and values are inclusive and justice-oriented, and that our students, staff, and broader community feel welcome and respected. We recognise the complex intersecting social issues within which medicine operates and acknowledge that BSMS has a vital role to play in ensuring that medicine is a positive force for change whose benefits are available to all. BSMS is the proud holder of an Athena Swan Gold Award, it is a member of the British Medical Association’s Racial Equality Charter and is committed to the broader task of decolonising and diversifying the medical school curricula.

Reasonable adjustments/learning support plans
For students with physical disabilities, long-term mental health or medical conditions, or specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, university services are available for advice, guidance and academic or personal support. Such support might include individual support tutors, assistive technology and Learning Support Plans (LSP) to recommend reasonable adjustments to teaching and assessment. If a student has an LSP and requires reasonable adjustments while on placement, we encourage them to discuss this with you when they attend your practice.
Student advice and wellbeing
If students encounter personal difficulties while on their clinical placements, please signpost them to the BSMS Student Wellbeing and Advice team, where they can seek support and guidance.
If you are concerned about a student, you can also notify the GP Placements team, and we will contact the relevant school office and/or student.

Religious observation/faith
It is important that students of all faiths and beliefs feel welcome and included in medical education. Religion and belief are also classified as protected characteristics by the Equality Act (2010).
We have the BSMS policy on religion and belief and the Medical Schools Council guidance on supporting students of different faiths is helpful, especially the section about clinical placements (pg.19). The main aim of these documents is to provide students with practical guidance to help fulfil their religious observances appropriately whilst meeting the training requirements of the medical school and the GMC.
The requirements and standards set out in the GMC’s Promoting excellence: standards for medical education and training document states that schools must ensure that “education and training is fair and is based on principles of equality and diversity”, setting out clear equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) indicators to be evidenced, making faith inclusion a regulatory requirement.
