GMC undergraduate clinical placement guidance

This guidance aims to support medical schools and placement providers to meet our standards linked to clinical placements. It also gives guidance on addressing issues which impact on placements or student welfare. Students can use this guidance to learn what’s expected of them on their placements.

This guidance applies to everyone involved in undergraduate clinical placements and assistantships. This includes medical schools, placement providers and medical students.

Where appropriate and relevant it can also be used by educators and placement providers involved in clinical placements.

Undergraduate placement reviews

BSMS operates an annual process to monitor and evaluate academic quality. The goal of this is to ensure that the school is appropriately accountable through an annual review of our courses, and that systems are in place to enhance quality in a way which is meaningful for students and staff.

As part of our commitment to ensuring the QA of clinical placements, practices who have agreed to host BSMS students must agree to complete a brief Undergraduate Placement Review (UGPR), once every three years. This is a requirement of all clinical placement providers and for our quality assurance process within the BM BS programme. For the review we require tutors to complete a self-assessment form, which will be distributed in conjunction with the student evaluation. The form is designed to check the status of teaching provided, safeguarding policies, and any changes to CQC status or known changes to the teaching workforce. It’s an opportunity to provide feedback on your experience of facilitating BSMS students and include reflections. You can preview the brief form here.

As well as this, BSMS also work closely with the training hub to ensure that most (if not all) of the clinical environments are approved for learners, at PCN level.

NHS England policies and guidance

The NHS has created a Multi Professional Quality Assurance of the Practice Learning Environment guide as part of the Multi Professional Quality Assurance of the Practice Learning Environment Toolkit.

Professionalism, fitness to practise and raising concerns

Medical students must demonstrate a high standard of behaviour at all times: justifying the trust placed in them as future members of the profession.

Fitness to practise is a part of how medical schools help their students become excellent professionals. BSMS has a process to identify and deal with students whose fitness to practise may be impaired. This document gives guidance to medical schools and educators on managing processes for professionalism concerns and fitness to practise.

Raising concerns about your learners

We take matters of professionalism and fitness to practice very seriously, if you are concerned about any of the students who are placed with you, please contact the medical school to raise this. You can do this via telephone or email, and we can discuss the follow-up, actions and next steps.
